AP Physics 1 is algebra-based and covers mechanics, waves, electric charge and circuits. AP Physics 2 is also algebra-based and covers fluids, thermodynamics, optics, atomic and nuclear physics. AP Physics C: Mechanics and C: Electricity and Magnetism are calculus-based and most rigorous. Students targeting engineering at top US universities should take AP Physics C. Students targeting premed or general sciences should take AP Physics 1 and 2.
FRQ accounts for 50% of your AP Physics score. Each FRQ is broken into parts (a), (b), (c) etc. Earn each sub-part mark independently — even if you get part (a) wrong, you can still score full marks on parts (b) and (c) using correct follow-through. Always write the relevant equation first, then substitute values, then solve. Show all working — AP Physics awards process marks, not just final answers.
AP Physics 1 and 2 have experimental design questions worth 12 points in the FRQ section. These test your ability to design an experiment that measures a specific relationship. Practice identifying independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variables, measurement tools, and how to graph and analyse results. Past AP Physics lab questions from 2015-2024 cover about 80% of what appears in current exams.
AP Physics C requires single-variable calculus for both Mechanics and E&M. Key calculus applications: integration to find work from force-displacement graph, differentiation to find velocity from position function, integration of Gauss's Law for electric field calculations, Faraday's Law in differential form for E&M. Students who struggle with calculus will struggle with Physics C — build calculus skills alongside physics.
AP Physics 1 typically requires 70-75% of total points for a 5. AP Physics C typically requires 65-70% for a 5. This means you do not need to be perfect to score 5. Focus on securing all easy marks first, then attempt harder questions. Multiple choice wrong answers are not penalised in AP Physics.
